Encryption is the formulaic or algorithmic process of converting data from a human or machine-readable format to a format that cannot be understood until the same or similar process is run on the data to decrypt them. Data are often encrypted when exchanged to ensure privacy of the data if intercepted during the exchange. For more information on encryption, check out the National Institute for Standards in Technology’s (NIST) cryptographic standards page.
